I get tons of questions from people about why some people do and some don’t make it in network marketing.

So, why do 97% of people who join and MLM fail?  Similarly, what’s the secret to success for the other 3% in this industry?

There are plenty of answers to these questions, but  here are the 6 most common.

1. They treat their business like a part-time hobby.  Even if you are part time, treating your business like a hobby is bound to produce very little.   Network Marketing is a BUSINESS and must be treated as such.  Just like becoming a MD requires education, so does learning to become a skilled network marketer.

2. They don’t believe in what they are doing.  Too often people go into this game “wanting” to create success, yet they don’t fully believe in what they do.  Doubting the business model you have joined is a guaranteed recipe for failure.

3. They lie to themselves.  People often kid themselves into believing they are actually conducting REVENUE PRODUCING ACTIVITIES, yet the reality is that many of them are simply being BUSY.  If you aren’t prospecting and exposing, you really ARE NOT doing network marketing…. it’s only marketing!  You must be on the phone for it to be networking!

4. They place blame everywhere else but on themselves.  People who don’t create commissions quickly point the finger at their sponsor, the company, the products, the tools or any other myriad of choices.  Bottom line:  If people are making money in your company and you aren’t, look in the mirror.  The cool thing is that in the end, YOU get to BLAME YOU for your SUCCESS or your failure.  I don’t know about you, but I think it’s a lot more fun blaming yourself for a big check!

5. They hop from program to program.  The grass may SEEM greener on the other side, but it almost never is.  The solution is not in another company.  The solution is working on you, your skills, and your work ethic.

6. They never really get after it.  Quite frankly, I think this is one of the biggest reasons for failure.  People again say that they “want” success, that they “want” freedom, but rolling up their sleeves and getting after it is another story.  If getting rich was easy, you would see way more Mercedes and BMW’s driving around.

So…to the other side of the coin:  What are the Secrets to Success in Network Marketing?

1. First of all, let me say that THERE ARE NO MLM SECRETS!  Success at anything requires hard, consistent work that is focused on developing your MLM skills.  Ask Michael Jordan how hard he practiced… Every day requires diligent effort that is on task and relevant to your business.

2. There are many out there that mention that you have to work on your thought patterns, because you are who you believe yourself to be.  Mike Dillard mentions this, T Harv Eker drills this into you in his seminars and books.  Your beliefs about yourself, your company, your abilities… all affect how you interact with others and will either build your business or destroy it.

3. Stay focused on your MLM company.  People who change every 3 months to a new company are kidding themselves (see #5 above).  If this is your pattern, it’s likely that you need to work on you!  There are times when an MLM opportunity comes along at the right time, with the right product and the right company leadership.  That’s pretty rare.  Stick with what you know – commit 1-2 years in your MLM choice (research it first!).

4. Work longer and harder than you have before.  If this is something you really want, you’ll put in the time and effort necessary, even when you don’t feel like it.  Do you think Lance Armstrong likes riding 6 hours a day in the rain?  No way!  But it’s worth it come July when he rides away from the rest of the pack.

5. It’s often said that you are the average of the 5 closest friends you have.  If your friends have what you have, you’re not going anywhere!  You must surround yourself with successful people.  No, I don’t mean you have to give up your friendships!  Buy books and CD’s written by people that have what you want.  Start making friends with people who inspire you.  Exapnd yourself by taking in what they do!  It’s all about personal development, so that you get a stronger belief in who you are and what you’re capable of.

This type of personal development allows you to build your leadership skills.  Beleive it or not, no-one will ever consciously join your mlm because it’s such a great opportunity.  People, by nature, want your leadership and guidance – your strong personality and knowledge.  They are joining YOU.  Get used to it.  That’s why you’ve had limited success up ’til now selling your “opportunity”.

6. Last, but not least…. never, ever, ever give up.  It may often seem easier to quit, but the most successful people in any industry know that nothing worthwhile ever comes of taking the easy route.  It may be uncomfortable, even demoralizing at times, but each day is a new opportunity to improve on the day before.  A loss is a loss.  It happens.  There will be more games.

Obviously there are more details related to guaranteeing your success in business.  But that’s how I see it.
