MLM Discipleship: How To Build An Amazingly Strong Business That Self Replicates
I was recently at a weekend seminar with Hal Perkins for a course titled “If Jesus Were A Parent”, based on his book by the same name.
Besides the eye opening methods about how to effectively disciple to my children to guide them into the world as disciples of Christ, I realized that much of what he said is true for a network marketing business too.
Before I get too far with this post, I hope I don’t offend anyone with the concept of creating an analogy between disciple building and MLM organization building. Bear with me a few minutes and you’ll see the parallel…
As Hal went over many different aspects of how to take the principles of discipleship into everyday life, I was amazed at how much of a cross over there is into a relationship building business such as network marketing.
At the core of the message was that there needs to be implementation of basic principles of listening to others on a regular basis to help them meet their needs.
If you wish your children to become disciples of Jesus Christ, you need to create a relationship with them and with the church. They need to have focused attention and leadership on a regular basis through their formative years until they have the knowledge to become disciples themselves.
Your MLM biz is a relationship based business whereby you are leading and teaching your reps until they have the ability to go out on their own with the necessary tools to do the same thing. Fortunately you are not likely to require 15 + years to get your reps ready to go forth.
Here’s the parallel I mentioned earlier: you are discipling your MLM reps to create more disciples out of them. You can use the word “leader” here, because your goal in creating a successful organization is to create leaders who have successful organizations too.
This is the basis of a strong business – as it is the corner stone of the church…
Create leaders who will go out and create more leaders. The intention is self replication through leadership/discipleship.
It is very hard to disciple large groups of people at a time. You can work with several people at a time very effectively, building the relationships and helping the growth of those people to be as complete and strong as possible.
However, if you preach your MLM to an enormously large group of people because you are more focused on quantity rather than quality, people start slipping through the cracks and you lose your effectiveness.
I guess the analogy would be that your organization would be the “Sunday Christians” of MLM. They get fired up when you hold your large meetings, but lack the ability to go forth and build effective groups of their own.
The most important aspect of discipling is the ability to listen to your disciples, hear what their needs are, and focus your attention on building them up according to the individual. Prepare them for the act of becoming disciples on their own.
In the relationship business of network marketing, you reps need your listening and teaching -not preaching – to create leaders who can replicate. When they have been taught how to do as you are doing now, they will be able to succeed.
Think of your job in networking as that of a disciple. Create more disciples. Watch them create disciples. And on, and on and on…
And watch your business explode.
